The Teacher
Education Program (TEP) at Holy Cross prepares undergraduates
to teach at the high and middle school level. All of the programs (except the teaching
of Religion) lead to an Initial license in Massachusetts as
a secondary-school (8-12) and/or middle-school (5-8) teacher
in the subject areas of Biology, Chemistry, English, French,
History, Latin, Mathematics, Physics, Spanish and Visual Arts when completing
a liberal arts degree with a major in the same academic area.
A non-licensure program for the teaching of Religion at the secondary and middle level is available for religious studies majors.
The curriculum
includes not only course work in the academic field in which
licensure is sought, but also specially designed education
courses that address knowledge and understanding necessary
for becoming a competent teacher. Toward this end, the curriculum
revolves around basic course work in educational psychology;
philosophical foundations of education; and methodology and pedagogy.
Academic instruction is carefully integrated with field-based
experience that consists of two 50 hour pre-practica
and a semester long, full-time intern teaching practicum.
The TEP
is focused on the study and practice of urban teaching.
All experiential elements of the program including
the teaching practica are within
the Worcester Public Schools.
