A Critique of U.S. Drug
Policy
The United States 'war on drugs' has had significant
impact on both our domestic anti-drug policies, and our international policies.
The United States is using the 'war on drugs' as justification for our
continued involvement in the domestic affairs of other countries.
Mexico, as well as the other 28 countries on the 'majors list' for drug
certification, have lost significant autonomy in domestic drug policy because
of the United States' supply reduction plan. We have been waging
a 'war on drugs' for two decades now, and still have not seen a decrease
in the amount of drugs in this country, nor a decrease in the numbers of
people suffering from drug addiction. We continue to spend billions
of dollars each year in the name of the 'war on drugs', when all that it
has done is justify the extension of our government's arms into the jurisdiction
of other nations. In Mexico, the government and the military are
using the anti-drug laws as a means of counter insurgence in the state
of Chiapas. In the United States, we are also using anti-drug laws
as a means of counter insurgence, rather it is directed at advancing our
ability to police other nations domestic legislation. The 'war on
drugs' has had negative implications for hundreds of thousands of people,
and it is about time that it is re-evaluated for what it truly is.
