The use of texts - words - in landscape architectural designs are not unusual, but some modern professional designers object strongly to this intrusion into "their" medium (whatever that is). This paper seeks to establish some historical and conceptual guidelines for the inclusion of inscriptions in landscape designs: it will adduce the work of Ian Hamilton Finlay as a key and influential exhibit in this enquiry.
