This course will provide the student with an overview of current research and practice within clinical psychology. It will focus specifically on the history of the field of clinical psychology, standards of training and practice, dominant schools of thought, and the integration of research and practice. In addition, the course will focus on several long-standing controversies within clinical psychology relating to the following: the validity of operational definitions of mental illness (e.g., DSM-IV), the validity of projective assessment techniques (e.g., the Rorschach ink-blot test), the validity of clinical judgment, and the efficacy of psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacological treatments of mental illness.
