Course Description:
Welcome to Abnormal Psychology. The
main purpose of this course is to teach you how to critically analyze,
integrate, and communicate concepts and findings relating to mental health.
In this course, we will place psychological research and clinical practice
in a larger social, historical, and cultural context.
The basic format of this course is as follows.
We meet Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:00 PM. Classes and projects will
be varied: lecture and informal discussions, case presentations, speakers,
and films that focus on particular aspects of mental health. In fact,
this semester will have a special focus on cinema and mental health.
Grades for the course are based
upon the following assignments, essays and exams:
-
Case Discussion essay (3 pages):
15%
-
Take home midterm exam:
20%
-
Film Review (4 pages):
15%
-
Mental illness in literature essay (4
pages): 15%
-
Take home final exam:
30%
-
Three printouts of e-mail contributions
to Psych L, our own List Service Group and on-going participation on the
List (e.g., review of reading, commentary on class discussion, response
to classmates’ e-mail discussion, etc.): 5%
Note: There will be 1 take home midterm, 1 take home final, three papers,
required participation on our Psych L group, and required film nights.
In addition, there are two optional film nights (see below) which you may
want to take advantage of before deciding which film to review for your
film review essay. All films will be viewed with Prof. Ed Thompson’s
class, Sociology of Mental Health. Please note that if there is a
legitimate health related or personal problem you must make appropriate
arrangements before the date of the exam or before the essay assignment
is due. If you miss an exam/essay assignment without first contacting
Prof. Wolfson, and other appropriate individuals (e.g., Class Dean, health
center), you will be given a zero for that exam/essay. There will
be no make-up for students who miss exams, take homes or essays without
prior permission.
