The Gospels
Matthew, Mark, and Luke will be examined in terms of literary
genre and design, theological content, and relationships with one another.
The aim is to discover how each narrative tells the story of Jesus and
why. The community or communities within which each gospel took shape
will be discussed, as well as the portraits of Jesus contained in the narratives.
Historical information about the content and function of the symbols, motifs,
social roles, and so on, present in the narratives will be used to illumine
the stories. The course will attend to differences between the gospels
with respect to conceptualizations of church, discipleship, God, salvation
history, and other topics will be investigated.
