3 - D Avian Anatomy Database
This page contains Wirefusion rendered 3-D files of bird bones. The scans can be manipulated on this webpage without special software or plug-ins.
In the future, this database will include a comparative series of all major bones from all major avian families. At present, this database is in the initial stages of formation, and only includes two different bird sterna as examples. Guidelines on how to rotate the scans or zoom in or out are provided. The online 3-D scans are highly compressed and are at only a fraction of the resolution of the original scans (which is 0.1 mm). Uncompressed scans will be available for free download and scientific study in the future.
The skeletal material we are scanning comes from the skeletal collection of the Department of Ornithology of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, and they own the copyright on the source material for the scans.
