Preface
fósforo, ignites. In Spanish, the
title means match, chemical element number 15, bringer of light, creative
spark. Elemental and explosive, fósforo is part forum, part showcase,
part creative release. The diversity of Hispanic and Latino culture has grown
steadily at Holy Cross and around the Worcester Consortium. With fósforo,
it has been granted a voice.
The students of the Omicron Epsilon Chapter of
Sigma Delta Pi (the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society) and the Foreign
Language Assistants (FLAs) in Spanish have created a space where Spanish can be
heard and Hispanic creativity presented not as a function of a language program
but as a community-wide cultural reality. A review of Hispanic inspiration,
fósforo endeavors to bring together contributions from students studying
Spanish at the College and in the Consortium, from students for whom Spanish is
not a requirement but a heritage, from Foreign Language Assistants whose homes
are in Spain and Latin America, and from professors whose devotion to Hispanic
and Latino cultures is the reason for their being where they are.
fósforo celebrates the Hispanic and
Latino contributions to the diversity of our community. Its existence is a
reminder that on campus, in the neighborhood, in the U.S., and indeed the
world, English is not the sole language of the creative imagination. |

fósforo, se enciende. Significa
cerilla, elemento químico número 15, ilustración, ingenio.
Elemental y explosivo, fósforo es en parte foro, en parte
muestrario, en parte desahogo creativo. La diversidad de las perspectivas
hispánicas y latinas va aumentándose a un ritmo constante en Holy
Cross y el Consorcio de Worcester. Con fósforo, ha encontrado una voz.
Los estudiantes del Capítulo Omicron
Epsilon de Sigma Delta Pi (Sociedad Nacional Honoraria Hispánica) y los
Lectores (FLAs) de Español han creado un espacio en el cual el
español se puede escuchar y la creatividad hispánica se presenta
no como función de un programa de estudios sino como una realidad
cultural en la comunidad universitaria. Revista de inspiración
hispánica, fósforo procura reunir contribuciones de alumnos que
estudian español en el College y el Consorcio, de estudiantes para
quienes el español no es un requisito sino una herencia, de lectores que
han venido a Estados Unidos de España y Latinoamérica, y de
profesores cuyo apego a las culturas hispánicas y latinas es la
razón por la cual están donde están.
fósforo celebra la contribución
que hispanos y latinos aportan a la diversidad de nuestra comunidad. Su
existencia nos recuerda que en el campus, en el vecindario, en el país,
y en el mundo entero, el inglés no es la única expresión
del ingenio creador. |
