Diana Cruz

One Word in English at the Hotel

It was her determined knock and the Spanish I'd heard
up and down the halls.
“Housekeeping!” she’d say
without discernible accent.
I spoke
while she shook her head no
to my English.
It followed that I tried:
Bueno, puedo hablar contigo en español.
More shakes right, left, right, left, right, left.
“Russian”
okay—
two words.
