Sponsored Sessions at the 2008 MLA

The Division on Spanish Medieval Language and Literature is pleased to be sponsoring three sessions at the 2008 meeting of the Modern Language Association (scheduled for 27-30 December in San Francisco). See details and contact information below.

Please note the March 15 deadline for submission of abstracts.

PLACES, TEXTS, AND COMMUNITIES IN MEDIEVAL SPAIN. The (conflicting) relations between medieval texts, the places in which they were produced, and/or the communities to which these texts were addressed. Possible directions include overt propaganda of a place, contestation of conflicting local traditions, or textual rearticulation of communities that attached themselves (or were forcibly attached) to a specific geographical locus. Submit 250-word abstracts by March 15 to Oscar Martín.

TEACHING THE SPANISH MIDDLE AGES: NEW CANONS, NEW AUDIENCES, NEW APPROACHES. Canonical reformulations and innovations in pedagogy, especially in light of evolving theories of cultural production, access to a broader range of texts (including Arabic, Hebrew, and aljamiado), and increased emphasis on cultural diversity in the curriculum. Submit 250-word abstracts by March 15 to Gregory S. Hutcheson.

CURRENT RESEARCH IN SPANISH MEDIEVAL LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE. New inroads in any area of medieval Spanish language, literature, and culture. Submit 250-word abstracts by March 15 to Anthony Cárdenas.
