Resources About Chipko and Himalayan Environmental Issues

Chipko: a Case Study in Complexity

Few issues illustrate the complexity of culture more dramatically than the conflict over equitable use of land and natural resources. This site is designed to provide teachers with resources about the Chipko Movement in India and other Himalayan environmental issues. The emphasis is on scholarly books and articles by both Western and South Asian scholars. Web resources include government agencies, articles on line, and research centers.

The site is interdisciplinary, with resources that address religion and ecology as well as history and politics.
A study of the Chipko project could provide an opportunity for teachers from different departments to collaborate. Most of all, I think a study of the Chipko movement will surface multiple points of view which can be used in the classroom to stimulate discussion, encourage critical thinking and emphasize the fact that there are no simple solutions to environmental problems.
