Jennifer Laden - World History through the Himalayan Region

Welcome to World History through the Himalayan Region

This web page contains three lessons or activities that relate to the study of world history through the culture and religions of the Himalayan Region.  The region is the home of important religious beginnings and developments, influential trade routes, and current political conflicts. The historical themes addressed in these assignments include: the impact of interaction, cultural and intellectual developments among and within societies, and the changes in functions and structures of states.

Tenth grade students enrolled in Advanced Placement World History will complete the Silk Road assignment and the Current Events journal.  The Silk Road assignment is completed by students the summer before entering AP World History.  The Current Events journal is a year long assignment which culminates in an end of the year assignment.  This purpose of this course is to study the history of the world through global movements.  The Himalayan Region offers case studies in major developments that have global implications and impact.

Ninth grade students will complete the Jataka Tales assignments as part of Global History and Geography I. This course in world history begins with the Neolithic Revolution and concludes around 1750 CE.  This assignment will take place during the study of the time period 500 BCE to 500 CE, as part of the Axial Age unit, in which the development and spread of Buddhism is discussed.  This course is taught in conjunction with an English course and attempts to connect the study of history with literature and art.
