"Who is Buddha?" Syllabus
Fall, 2004
Marty Schmidt

Students in this course will:
1) Gain an understanding of the Buddha's past lives (Jataka Tales) and the life in which be was "awakened."
2) Gain an understanding of the basic Buddhist worldview.
3) Gain an understanding how the Buddhism is practiced in Theravada, Mahayana, and Tantric branches of Buddhism.
4) Consider their own spiritual journey in light of the insights of Buddhism.

Basic Course Outline:
1) Introduction: Geography, Jataka Tales, Buddha's Life; The Buddha's Past Lives and the Life of his Enlightenment
2) Basic Buddhist Concepts
3) Personal reflection on spiritual identity
4) Theravada Buddhism and meditation
5) Mahayana Buddhism
6) Chi Lin Nunnery: Visit by the nuns and school field trip to the nunnery
7) Final projects
8) Visit to HKIS Lower Primary

Types of Assignments:
1) Frequent readings
2) Quizzes, writings and perhaps one major test
3) One major presentation to our class and perhaps a sharing of learning with HKIS primary school students.
4) Read one book about Buddhism
5) Personal reflections on the material in relationship to your own spiritual life.

Field trips: To Chi Lin Nunnery in Kowloon; HKIS Lower Primary.
