When asked to create a web site that I would use, I thought about the variety of students who I teach and the subject material they are taught.  Therefore I will be using parts of this site for second, third and as part of the after school science program.
Presently, I am a K-6 special education teacher.  For the past few years I have been co-teaching second grade.  In addition to supporting students who have special needs, there are several ESL students, mainly from Southeast Asia, who also need reading and writing support in the classroom.  As well, next year I will be supporting students in 3rd grade during a unit of study about Asia. And for fun, after school, I teach the third and fourth grade science club.
My initial reason for attending this Institute was to further enhance the welcoming climate of the second grade responsive classroom where I spend the majority of my day.  The goal of a responsive classroom is to create a safe/inviting learning environment for all children.

Objective: Introduce 2nd grade children to Nepalese children through a variety of topics, water, games, and kites.

Procedure:

  1. Show slide show.
  2. Discussion.  Ask questions like, “what did you notice”, what surprised you”.
  3. Then ask the question.  “What activities might an eight year old American child do in a typical day?”  Record answers on chart paper.
  4. Next ask “What might an eight year old Nepalese child do on an average day?”  Record answers on chart paper.
  5. Save these papers to have discussions as you complete the following 3 lessons.
