13b Ranworth (Norfolk), Church of St. Helen, detail of screen to
the north. The northern group of female saints presents an abbess (Ethedreda?),
Agnes, John the Baptist (object of local devotion), and Barbara.
Barbara is seen wearing a crown, a heavenly reward of her faith and carrying
the palm that is the symbol of martyrdom. Agnes has her symbol of
a lamb. All the saints are presented against a "cloth of honor,"
richly woven and/or embroidered textiles that were standard elements of
medieval and Renaissance ceremonies. Here the saints are further
honored by having angels hold the cloth.
