18c Norton (Suffolk), St. Andrew's Church, Baptismal font, detail of
bowl. On one of the eight sides of the bowl is an ox with scroll,
presumably once painted with the name of the Evangelist St. Mark,
whose symbol is a winged ox. Next to Mark is the Pelican in its
Piety, piercing its breast to feed its young. This image was
long a symbol of Christ, whose sacramental blood nourishes the faithful. |
