Director of Academic Concerns

 
 

The Director of Academic Concerns is ultimately responsible for all SGA initiatives in the area of academics. Working closely with the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College, he/she will be expected to address concerns involving academic programs, curriculum, student representation, faculty affairs, and other areas of academic affairs. Possible project areas for the 2004- 2005 academic year include continuing the SAC/CEF review, continuing the ongoing review of the curriculum by serving as the sole student representative on the Curriculum Review Action Steering Committee and coordinating the student representatives to the CRAC working groups, and continuing to coordinate opportunities for faculty and students to spend social time outside of the classroom. The Director of Academic Concerns is a member of the Committee on College Governance and serves as a voting representative to the Academic Affairs Council, Curriculum Committee, and the Faculty Assembly. He/She serves as Chair of the SGA Committee on Academic Concerns.

Director of Academic Concerns – Dan Ricciardi:

Daniel Ricciardi ’06 is starting his second year as the SGA’s Director of Academic Concerns. Since taking office in September, 2004 Ricciardi has labored tirelessly in an attempt to create more opportunities for student voice in the Academic Structure of the College. This past year Ricciardi has served on the Academic Affairs Council, Curriculum Review Steering Committee, College Curriculum Committee, and the ITS Policy Committee. In addition to this, was nominated by his fellow members of the AAC to serve on the Priorities Committee, the advisory committee that establishes the agenda and main concerns of the AAC. Beyond this committee work Ricciardi has pursued numerous initiatives, including the successful establishment of a Library Student Advisory Council, programs to encouraged increased student faculty interactions, a review of the evaluation of teaching and student representatives on all of the Curriculum Review Subcommittees. Previously in SGA Ricciardi was the Chair of the Election Committee.

Outside of SGA, Ricciardi served as the Campus Activities Board’s Director of Public Relations from September 2003 to January of 2005, was an RA in Healy Hall and is now an RA in the Apartments, and is the current vice president of the Phi Alpha Theta, the History Honors Society. In addition to these activities Ricciardi has also been employed by the Information Technology Services Department as a Technology Assistant and has worked for both User Services and Network Services.

In previous years, the Director of Academic Concerns have represented their student body diligently. Most recently for the 2003 -2004 academic year, Sarah Latham '04 made an impression on the administration with her drive and enthusiasm. Sarah's worked hard to connect the SGA and numerous SAC's to work towards a common goal, as well as created the first Battle of the Departments. During the 2002 - 2003 academic year, Austin Miller '05 served as the Director of Academic Concerns and helped improve the Academic Honesty policies. In 2001 - 2002 Kassia Smith '02 also held the position as Director of Academic Concerns.
