  • Safety Walk Through

    On November 1, Caitlin Duignan ’07, Director of Gender Concerns, lead a group, including students, public safety and Chief McNamara on a walk around campus after dark to identify potential safety hazards.  They were able to identify areas where the lighting needed improvements and repairs, as well as possible increased card swipe access to certain entrances.   Caitlin will continue to make sure that the concerns of the group are addressed.

  • Recycling Program

    SGA representatives were present at a recent meeting to discuss recycling on campus.  EcoAction will be working with Inter-House Council to improve the recycling process on campus. 

  • SBC Review

    On November 11, Molly Carroll ’07 held an open forum for RSO’s to discuss the budget process.  In attendance were representatives from BSU, CAB, Gesso and the International Student Union.  They offered suggestions to the committee on how to run the budget process for next year.  Some suggestions included holding the process over a shorter time (3 days versus 10), making the budget applications public via a binder in SPLD, and asking the SBC to ask more specific questions regarding miscellaneous spending.  Molly then addressed the GA on November 14th asking for further feedback.

  • UniverCity Partnership

    The UniverCity Partnership, headed by Executive Director Armand Carriere, is a format for members of the Worcester Consortium schools to participate in the revitalization and development of downtown Worcester. Besides the local colleges, the Mayor’s office, the City of Worcester and the local Chamber of Commerce are also a part in the partnership. The Partnership is currently working on the City Square project which aims to convert the former Worcester Common Outlets into an updated downtown center, with restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. Director of Community Relations, Patrick Murray '07 serves as a liason to this project.

  • No Place For Hate

    Kolt Bloxon '06, Director of Diversity invites you to a review of the "Hate Happened Here Protocol" on November 30 in the Rehm Library.  This event is a part of the No Place for Hate Campaign, a national initiative to "promote prejudice free communities in which all people are appreciated for their differences."  Kolt is working to make Holy Cross the first college campus in the country to become a "No Place for Hate."  Look for an email with additional details.

  • Executive Cabinet Retreat
     
    In early September the Executive Cabinet held its annual retreat.  In addition to getting to know one another and familiarizing ourselves with the organization, we created our list of goals for the year.  From our goals have identified four main themes, communication, collaboration, development and community that we will be working on this year.  We look forward to your involvement and enthusiasm in targeting these areas! 
  • Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort 

    The SGA Executive Cabinet organized a collection at the homecoming game in cooperation with the Chaplain's Office, Public Safety, Student Affairs, NROTC, and numerous other campus entities.  Members of the Senate, Cabinet and student volunteers collected money at the football game to go towards the Stand Bayou campus effort. The response was great! In all we collected $3,651.12!!!  

    After the Mardi Gras Themed Night at Kimball approximately $1500 was donated to the Stand Bayou campaign though meal invalidations!! 
  • CRASH Course at Holy Cross 

    On Wednesday, October 5th Kolt Bloxon '06, Director of Diversity, hosted a discussion panel in between the two showings of Crash in Kimball Theater.  The conversation was great! The panelists, including Dan Riccardi '06, Multicultural Peer Educators Keith Curtis, Jessica Ball, and Angelina Kim, Prof. James Bryant form Sociology. The audience was very response and the discussion focused on race relations, gender relations and health concerns within the community. We also talked a lot about responsibility and what civic duty actual means: understanding people, tolerating people or not dealing with people, which of these is best.
  • General Assembly (GA) Meetings

    September 
    The Co-Chairs welcomed back the group and stressed the power of the GA as a voting assembly.  The GA voted to make the Men's Club Lacrosse, The Running Club, Best Buddies, The Science Ambassadors, Fools on the Hill, and Habitat for Humanity recognized student organizations.  A Constitutional Amendment was proposed, requiring Co-Chairs to be confirmed by the Senate.  While the bill launched lively discussion, the GA voted it down.     October 
    Alumni Nicole Mortorano '04 and Jon Lopez '04 addressed the assembly to introduce the mission of the Teach for America program and discuss the opportunities of the program.  In light of recent off campus events both the Co-Chairs, Patrick Murray '07, Director of Community Relations, and Brian Laws '06, Speaker of the Senate, described their respective commitments to working toward an improved and safer off-campus climate.     The GA was again called to exercise its power as a voting body. The following clubs were voted to become recognized student organizations: College Street Chronicle, Instant Mayhem, the Holy Cross Historical Society, and NEED (Nutrition, Exercise, Eating Disorders).  The proposed Constitutional Amendment, which would require that the chair of the Senate Budget Committee also serve as the chair of the Reserve Board starting with the 2006-2007 Senate, was passed by a two-thirds vote. 

  • Congratulations, Father McFarland!! 

    The Senate drafted and passed a bill to acknowledge Father McFarland's five years as President of the college.

  • Faculty Assembly Meeting  

    The Faculty Assembly is a legislative body made up of the entire faculty and representatives of the administration and student body that is in place to address academic issues and the status of the faculty.  On Tuesday, October 18 they held their first meeting of the academic year.  The meeting consisted of reports from members of the individual working committees of the eight areas of the curriculum review.
  • Community Relations

    UniverCity Partnership 
    Patrick Murray '07, Director of Community Relations has been working to initiate student involvement with the UniverCity Partnership, a group in place to advise the city and downtown developers how to make Worcester a more student friendly place.  

    Resurrecting the Off-Campus Student Union 
    Along with Erin Breen of SADER, Patrick Murray '07 is working to reinstitute this organization which works to create better relations between off-campus students and the Worcester Police Department. 

  • Gender Concerns 

    Caitlin Duignan '07, Director of Gender Concerns, has organized a campus wide walk through with Chief McNamara, members of the administration and representatives of the SGA. The hope is that they well be able to identify areas on campus that need improvements made in order to insure a safe environment. 

  • Housing Review Process
     
    Meg Kenney '06, Director of Student Life and Boskey Patel '07 are chairing a committee to review the housing process.   They will be responsible for assessing the current housing system, researching other housing initiatives, reviewing students' comments and making recommendations to Housing and Student Affairs.  The committee will meet Friday, October 28 at 5pm and continue through the end of November.  If you would like to become a part of the process please send a brief paragraph stating your interest to Meg. 

  • Curriculum Review  

    The Curriculum Review is in its fifth and final year.  The review focuses on eight main issues: common area requirements, first year experience, study abroad, collaborative teaching, capstone experience, honors program, advising and 2Y0.  Dan Ricciardi '06, Director of Academics has been an active in the review and is interested in getting student opinions. There are open seats on many of the committees for student input.  Please contact Dan if you have an interest and keep your eyes open for forums to discuss these issues.
