Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need to have prior experience?

The Holy Cross Crusader “Goodtime” Marching Band is open to all interested students. For those of you who have not participated in a marching band before, the band holds an annual, 1-time-only “band camp” at the beginning of the year for ALL members (old and new). This is a chance for everyone to develop the marching skills required for the upcoming season. The Holy Cross "Goodtime" Marching Band has members of varying experience and abilities. Some people come from competitive high school bands that competed nationally, while others were far less competitive and might not have even marched before.

What kind of time commitment is involved?

Traditionally, the band holds three practices a week and spends its Saturdays prepping for the game and performing at the game during the fall. During the spring, formal practices normally cease, and the band simply plays in the stands at basketball and hockey games. Attendance is expected at all practices and games barring any major conflicts. Schedules are distributed early each season so that members may plan accordingly.

Do I need to be a music major?

No, the band is open to students of all majors and disciplines. We have members whose majors include Music, Mathematics, Psychology, Philosophy, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Spanish, History, etc. In fact, upper classmen are often willing to assist other members with classes that they may have previously taken.

Do I need to own/rent an instrument?

No, the band has instruments available that you can sign out for the year free of charge.

Tell me more about the Color Guard.

The Color Guard is a student group that brings another element to the halftime performances. Using various props and choreography, the Color Guard brings a visual element to the band’s music. They practice with the band during the week and perform at halftime on Saturdays. Traditionally, the band sets aside one song during its halftime show to feature the talents of the Color Guard. During the spring, the Color Guard is encouraged to take up an instrument (if they so desire) and continue on as part of the Holy Cross Crusader “Goodtime” Pep Band.
