A CAUSE, A MOVEMENT, A LEGACY
Our Movement
The Black Student Union (BSU) is an organization, on the campus
of College of the Holy Cross located in Worcester, Massachusetts
, with a strong emphasis on academic, cultural, social, political,
and leadership development. Founded in the fall of 1968, by the
first large class of African-American students, (Holy Crosss
positive response to the untimely assassination of Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr.), the BSU has upheld the collective effort and commitment
of the devoted founders by being grounded in our rich culture. Continuing
this historic and contemporary tradition, the BSU members of 1995
obtained our current office located in Hogan room 242 and yet the
movement continues.
Our Mission
The goal of the Black Student Union is to provide a support system
for African-American students and all members of the Holy Cross
community by creating an environment that provides and promotes
leadership opportunities, embraces identity and encourages diversity.
We believe it is our responsibility to successfully convey our collective
perspectives of the Black Experience to our fellow students as well
as faculty, staff and administrators. Additionally we are fully
aware of our unique and vital position at this institution, recognizing
the need to initiate understanding through group solidarity and
collective identity.
Our Goals
In honor of our rich heritage; we passionately embrace this opportunity
to educate ourselves, the Holy Cross community and the world by
the following:
Ensuring that our membership has a sense of Ownership to the organization
Actively communicating with the Diversity Task Force and providing
them input on how they can make the experience of all students better.
Celebrating the life and times of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
each academic year here at Holy Cross
Providing a safe place medium through which students can voice their
needs and concerns to the appropriate agencies of the College
Generate a greater understanding among all cultures while actively
promoting and participating in academic, political, and social programs
which broaden understanding of the crucial aspects of race and social
environments within our community
