I. Name:
Holy Cross Dance Ensemble
II. Purpose:
To provide an opportunity for students to
take classes in a variety of dance forms (i.e. ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical,
hip-hop) in an extracurricular setting. Also, to allow qualified
students the opportunity to experiment with choreography by putting together
dances to be taught to their peers for performances throughout the year.
III. Membership:
All Holy Cross undergraduates regardless of
race, sex, national origin or sexual orientation will be eligible for membership.
Try-outs will be held each fall to determine membership. Try-outs
will operate as a dance workshop with the respective choreographer reviewing
general technique with the perspective members while the officers evaluate
each dancer. A majority of the evaluators must agree to accept each
candidate for membership to be granted.
Members may be expelled for disruptive behavior
or for open disrespect toward the club or a member of the club, and with
a two-thirds vote of the membership. Members may also be expelled
by the officers/choreographers due to continual tardiness or absence from
class.
IV. Offices:
Ensemble offices will include President, Vice
President, Secretary and Treasurer.
A. Officer Responsibilities:
The President is responsible for organizing
classes, workshops and trips to performances and/or competitions, and for
coordinating all performances given by the Ensemble. The president
is also responsible for maintaining contact with the Moderator.
The Vice President is responsible for
organizing all classes and performances for the basketball games.
The Vice President also acts as the SGA representative and aids the President
in his/her duties.
The Secretary is responsible for keeping
track of all items of importance discussed at meetings and sending out
messages to the general membership as needed. The Secretary is also
in charge of advertisement of Ensemble sponsored events and shows, and
in organizing fund-raising events.
The Treasurer is in charge of all expense
accounts held by the Dance Ensemble. This includes collection of
dues and other incoming monies and also the allocation of money as required.
All requests for funds will be directed to the treasurer who will then
work with the moderator (when necessary) to complete all forms for withdrawal.
The treasurer also works with the secretary in planning fund-raisers.
The responsibilities of any officer
is not exclusively his or her own. Responsibilities may be shared
or temporarily transferred to another officer if the need arises.
B. Election of Officers:
Elections will be held each Spring.
Term of office is one year. Any member wishing to become an officer
must be taking two or more classes with the Ensemble when elections are
held, and continue to take two throughout their term of office. Election
requires a two-thirds vote of all non-senior members.
C. Impeachment of Officers:
Officers may be impeached only if there
is evidence that (s)he is either not properly fulfilling his/her office
to the benefit of the organization or is disruptive of the goals of the
organization. Impeachment requires a written letter of complaint
and a two-thirds vote of the membership to be official.
V. Choreographers:
A. Choosing Choreographers:
Choreographers will be chosen through
try-outs held at the end of the school year, after the annual Spring Show.
B. Responsibilities:
Each choreographers is in charge of
running his/her respective class. This includes setting class time,
signing out studio space, keeping attendance and reporting frequent absences.
Choreographers are also responsible for purchasing and assembling costumes
(in conjunction with the officers).
C. Impeachment:
If any choreographer is found to be
incompetent or is in any way disruptive to the goals of the Ensemble (s)he
may be impeached. This requires a written request by an officer or
class representative and a discussion and vote by the officers and members
of the respective class. A two-thirds vote of the class is required
to impeach a choreographer.
VII. The Faculty Moderator:
The Dance Ensemble shall have as advisor a
Moderator who shall be a member of the faculty or administration appointed
by the College. Term of office is three (3) years and is renewable.
The Moderator shall advise the Dance Ensemble
on the organization of classes and of the annual recital and will keep
the officers informed of opportunities to see dance performances or to
invite performers to Holy Cross. If (s)he chooses (s)he may also
teach a class and choreograph a group dance for the recital. (S)he
is also invited to choreograph a solo or small group dance to perform at
the recital as a way of thanks for all his/her help throughout the year.
No contract which the Moderator views as contrary
to the purposes or policies of the organization shall be signed, provided
that the Moderator has expressly communicated his/her disapproval to the
President of the Dance Ensemble and to the Director of Student Activities.
VIII. Meetings:
Classes shall each meet once a week.
Supplementary classes may be added as necessary (ie. before performances).
There will also be a mandatory dress rehersal before each show.
IX. Amendments:
Amendments to this constitution may be made
at any time. Any member wishing to amend the constitution must first
state their desire, in writing, to the officers. The officers will
then call a meeting of the entire membership where the amendment will be
presented and discussed. A two-thirds vote of the membership is required
to pass any amendment. After an amendment has been passed the constitution
will then be resubmitted to the SGA for approval and official recognition.
By-Laws:
I. Dues:
Pending funding given by school and cost required
for costumes. Dancers may also be required to pay a fee for any workshops
and also for any performances seen with the Dance Ensemble.
II. Advisors:
The Dance Ensemble
may also request guidance from other professors in the Drama/Theatre department
regarding the organization of the annual recital.
