Holy Cross 5, UNH 6 Non-conference game Saturday, November 1 at the Hart Center
Recap: The Holy Cross Club Hockey team lost a heartbreaker Saturday night to the University of New Hampshire, 6-5. With the score tied 3-3 after two periods, Holy Cross scored first in the third period as Frank Powers ’07 made a great play attracting two defensemen and sliding the puck over to Kurt Gustafson ’04 who put a nice move on the UNH goalie and scored his first goal of the season. This put the Crusaders up 4-3. Less than 2 minutes later, Aaron Mancuso, a junior transfer from Assumption, increased the Holy Cross lead as he scored on a slap shot from the left side. Paul Riley ‘07 was credited with the assist. This was the last highlight of the night for the Crusaders. UNH responded with three unanswered goals to give Holy Cross its second loss in three nights. The Crusaders came out flat in the first period as UNH scored twice in the first 2 minutes of the game. UNH added another goal midway through the first period giving them a 3-0 lead after one period. No one is sure what was said in the locker room between periods, but the Crusaders came out a different team for the second period. The HC power play took advantage of numerous UNH penalties early in the period. JP Lannon ’04 scored on a nice tip-in from Joe Weber ’05, also assisted by Rob Clifford ’05. The power play got another chance a minute and half later and scored again as Weber buried a wrister from the point, assisted by Joe Mantovani ’06 and Clifford. The Crusaders continued to outplay UNH adding another goal 3 minutes later when Mancuso converted a Paul Riley rebound for his first goal of the season. The Crusaders outshot UNH 17-9 in the second period and 6-2 in the first half of the third period but could not hold on to the victory. Holy Cross gets a rematch with Wildcats this Friday night as they travel to UNH to play at the Whitemore Center at 9:00 pm. The team returns home to the Hart Center Sunday night to host the Harvard JV team at 6:00 pm. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
