"A Minute with McKeon"

This fall, there will be a new feature on the website. Tentatively named "A Minute with McKeon," each week on Monday or Tuesday there will be a new short video stream available that will give a quick rundown of how the week has gone with your host Jim McKeon. Based on past Patriot League videos, guests could range from Army recruits to a neighborhood dog. Stay tuned.

HC Places 3rd at CCSU

In their first action of the year, the Holy Cross Men's Cross Country team finished 3rd to Syracuse and Albany on September 4 at Stanley Quarter Park. John Nieskens led the Crusader effort with a 7th place finish, while Steve Kress (16th), Tim Murphy (21st), James Clifford (23rd), and John Ortolani (25th) rounded out the scoring.

Full Results can be found here. Next week the Crusaders will travel to UNH to compete, not the Fordham Invite as originally scheduled.

A Minute with McKeon: 9/5/04

In the first edition, McKeon gives a rundown of the team, preseason and CCSU.

Check out this week.

Crusaders take 9th at UNH

On Saturday September 11th in Durham, New Hampshire, the Crusaders put forth a strong effort across the board. Led by John Nieskens' 23rd place finish, Holy Cross placed 9th in the field of Albany, Maine, Harvard, Stony Brook, Bentley, Binghamton, CCSU, UConn, BC, and UNH. UNH took the team title with 53 points. Later this week seven members of the squad will head to Notre Dame for the National Catholic Invite, while others will compete at Fitchburg.

John Nieskens - 26:15, Steve Kress - 27:21, Tim Murphy - 27:28, James Clifford - 27:29, Sean Dougherty - 27:46, Brendan Kearney - 27:50, Bernard Ozarowski - 27:58, John Ortolani - 28:02, EJ Hughes - 28:29, Conor Fitzpatrick - 29:01.

A Minute with McKeon

After he was unable to read his own handwriting rehearsing for this week's clip, it has been decided that McKeon will hand over all script writing duties to his teammates. Tune in soon for the second clip in the series.

Crusaders take 9th at Notre Dame

On Friday September 17th in South Bend, the Crusaders placed 9th in the 30 team field at the National Catholic Invitational. Nieskens, Murphy, Clifford, Kress, and Kearney made up the HC top 5. Full Results can be found on Notre Dame's website. Other members of the team raced at Fitchburg and took home the title, taking 7 of the top 11 spots. Freshmen Brian Smerkers was 3rd, sophomore Bernard Ozarowski 4th, and freshman Michael Shaw was 5th. Full results.

Murray Keatinge Invite

The Crusaders began the month of October in Orono, Maine, at the annual Murray Keatinge Invitational, which saw 1-2-3 go to Dartmouth, Brown, and Iowa. The pack stepped up today as James Clifford (26:47), Steve Kress (26:51) and Brendan Kearney (27:18) all PRed, with Tim Murphy (27:10) running a season's best as well. Just 61 seconds separated the Crusaders' 1-6 runners. On Friday the 8th, HC will be in action at Franklin Park in Boston for the New England Championships with the Varsity race going off at 1pm, and the Sub-Varsity section at 1:45. Full Results

HC Athletics Department writeup is here.

New England Championships

After a week of tough and impressive workouts, the Crusaders raced October 8th at Franklin Park in Boston on a surprisingly warm day to kick off Columbus Day weekend. However, what resulted was a slightly disappointing day, especially after coming off the speedy course at Orono, ME. The top 5 consisted of Nieskens, Kress, Murphy, Kearney and Clifford, as HC placed 29th. Partial Results.

"Alternative Family Weekend"

Since the Cross Country team will be at Bucknell for Family weekend, all families are invited to participate in "Alternative Family Weekend" the weekend of the 5th to the 7th, when there is a home football game against Marist. Please email co-captain James Clifford for more information.

Patriot League Championships

Held this year at Bucknell, the Patriot League Championship was a disappointment for the Crusaders, as they finished 8th behind Lafayette. A rain soaked course created ankle deep mud in spots, slowing the field considerably. American went 1-2-3-4-9 to take the title. Full results can be found here. On November 13th, HCXC looks to tackle the 10K at VCP in the NCAA Qualifier. This race will begin at 12:30.

NCAA Qualifier

10K - Saturday Nov. 13th - Van Cortland Park - 12:30pm start.

2004 Cross Country Preview

The class of 2005 is ready for their chance to lead HCXC to a strong fall campaign. NH native John Nieskens, presently training in Colorado with 2001 Fitchburg Invitational Champ EJ Hughes, is looking to have another monster season paving the way for the Crusaders. New Yorkers Sean Dougherty and James McKeon have spent time in the top 7 in the past and will solidify their positions this year. McKeon remarked that "PRs are like screen doors, they are made to be broken." It is this type of attitude that has Jim postitioned for a breakout XC season. Co-captains James Clifford and Brendan Kearney, both from New Jersey, round out the strongest class top to bottom in a number of years. Based off last year's performances, this year's top 7 could be the first squad in over 5 years with no MA runners. Junior Tim Murphy is coming off a great outdoor season, and sophomore standout Steve Kress is looking to return to last XC season's form, which had him 2nd on the squad at the Patriot League Championships at Lafayette. Making their collegiate debuts this year will be freshmen Brian Smerkers, Michael Shaw, and Sean Murphy, as well as junior Donald Steinert. The Crusaders kick off the 2004 season at Central Connecticut September 4th, where they will be defending their crown.

This picture of the class of 2005 was taken at the end of Cross Country/beginning of Indoor 2001-2002.
