C. Attendance:
Attendance is voluntary;
however, many of the lectures for this course are illustrated and
there will be no re-shows of slides, movies, etc. Any late arrival of assigned
papers must be authorized by your class dean. Failure to obtain the proper
authorization for a missed examination will result in a grade of F = 0.
D. Written Reports:
-
Written reports are
first graded on the basis of a letter grade which takes into equal account
both style/expression and content/argument. A numerical grade is then assigned
for the computation of the final grade. A list of Research Paper topics
will be presented shortly after the semester is underway. An outline of
your research paper (printed, 2 pages, double-space) must be presented
in
duplicate no later than Friday, November 16th.
The outline should consist of the argument of your paper and the bibliography.
There is no grade for this outline, but there is a one-half grade penalty
on the research paper if this outline is not submitted by November
16th. The research paper itself (10-12 pages, printed, and double-spaced)
is due no later than 4PM December 7th. You
are required to submit two copies of your research paper.
Any
extension of the due date for the research paper outline or research paper
itself must be authorized by your Class Dean. Your research paper must
include footnotes, or endnotes, and a bibliography. The final grade for
your research paper will be a composite grade determined equally on the
basis of (1) research and logical argumentation and (2) style and expression.
You are advised to select your main thoughts with care and to support them
with clear and pertinent evidence. It is recommended that you pay special
attention to the smooth transition of thought and language between sentences
and paragraphs. You are also urged to avoid slang expressions, to maintain
agreement of person and number between subject and verb, and to use appropriate
punctuation. Be most careful with your spelling since there is a penalty
of one-half letter grade for each four misspellings. A late paper will
receive a penalty of one-half letter grade reduction for each day late.
E. Statement
on Academic Honesty:
Any and
all acts of academic dishonesty (e.g., cheating, plagiarism, etc.) will
result in a grade of F for the assignment and written notification
to your Class Dean. Plagiarism is the deliberate reproduction, in whole
or part, of ideas, data, illustrative material, words, or statements of
another person as one’s own without full and proper acknowledgment. Any
doubts about proper acknowledgment should be directed to the course instructor.
All students are expected to be familiar with the definitions and penalties
associated with violations of academic dishonesty, as they are described
in the Holy Cross Student Handbook.
