Here we are, my wife, Eleanor, who actually owns the car (in name)
and myself, at the start of the Guinness Book of Records Run at the MG
meet in Washington in 1994. What a blast. Hundreds of MGs of
all vintages gathered in one spot for show and tale swapping. For
those of us brave enough there was even a chance at running our cars at
speed on Summit Point Raceway. I couldn't resist this and Thursday
morning, bright and early, I was there. We did several practice laps
with our instructors and then, after a drivers meeting of about 45 minutes,
it was out on the track. What hurt was that during the drivers meeting
it rained briefly. Just enough to raise the oil on the track.
I went out on the track, FIRST CAR OUT, and, sure enough, on a corner I
had taken earlier at the same speed, I spun out and went off the track.
Most embarrassing. Got back on the track and, on several occasions,
hit triple digits on the long back straight. It was a real rush but
I have no need to do it again. Especially having seen the results,
on the same day, of a beautifully restored TD rolled (without a roll bar).
The driver survived but the car was really trashed.
