Gustavo Pérez Firmat

A poet, fiction writer, and scholar, Gustavo Pérez Firmat is David Feinson Professor of Humanities at Columbia University. Born in Cuba and raised in Miami, he has written widely on life between languages, including several books of literary and cultural criticism, four collections of poetry, a novel and a memoir. His study of Cuban American culture, Life on the Hyphen, was awarded the Eugene M. Kayden University Press National Book Award for 1994. In 1997, Newsweek included him among "100 Americans to watch for the next century" and Hispanic Business Magazine selected him as one of the "100 most influential Hispanics." We thank Professor Pérez Firmat for providing us the opportunity to reprint some of his writing here. Noël Valis

A preeminent scholar of Spanish literature, Noël Valis has recently turned her attention to creative writing. As Professor of Spanish at Yale University, she has written extensively on Spain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, on topics as varied as realist prose, contemporary poetry (including bilingual poetry), wartime narrative, and kitsch. Her scholarship has earned awards from the MLA, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. In 2003, she published Mi casa me recuerda/My House Remembers Me, a collection of poems in English and Spanish. The Holy Cross chapter of Sigma Delta Pi was honored to have her give the keynote address at this year's induction ceremony.

Preeminente investigadora de la literatura española, Noël Valis se ha dedicado recientemente a la creación literaria. Como profesora de español en la universidad de Yale, ha escrito extensamente sobre España en los siglos diecinueve y veinte, acerca de temas tan variados como la prosa realista, la poesía contemporánea (incluso bilingüe), la escritura de posguerra, y la cursilería. Ha recibido premios y becas del MLA, la Fundación Guggenheim, y The National Endowment for the Humanities. En 2003, publicó Mi casa me recuerda/My House Remembers Me, una colección de poemas en español e inglés.
