Why Study the Himalayas?
As an educator, I believe in the concept of lifelong learning and try continually to further my own learning.  My current area of study is the Himalayan region of the world.  I chose to study this region for several reasons:
  • To capitalize on the interest my students have regarding the situation in Tibet and the stories of climbing Mt. Everest.
  • To challenge my students to relate to people who they perceive to be completely different from themselves.
  • To cultivate higher level thinking and problem solving skills.
  • To inspire active citizenship.
  • To create a greater understanding of our western, industrialized, capitalistic society by studying a culture that has a different heritage.
  • Finally, the Himalayan region provides an engaging study for students of all ages.
