INTRODUCTION TO TIBET AND ITS MUSIC

“Tashi delek”, and welcome!  Tashi delek is a phrase that you might hear in Tibet.  It means “hello,” “goodbye,” and sometimes “good fortune.” In this case, it is an invitation to learn a little about Tibet -- about its people and music -- and maybe even a little more about yourself.

There is a lovely poem composed by a Tibetan traveler which begins like this: “I am walking along a mountain road – a long way away from my hometown.  I have no way of knowing my parents’ well-being.  Sing a song to the sky.  Sing and the earth will move.  Let’s sing and dance and
forget all the trouble and worry.” What does this suggest to you about music in Tibet? Let’s “travel” there and think about some ways Tibetans use music in their day-to-day lives.

Before we talk about Tibet and its music in more detail, it might be a good idea to see just where Tibet fits into our world and its history.
