Lesson 2: Reading Jataka Tales and Famous Indian Legends

Objectives:
    Students will be able to
1. Investigate moral lessons presented in the Jataka tales and the Indian legends.
2. Examine how Jataka tales teach about Buddhist values, as Indian legends teach about Hindu value

Materials:
1. Various copies of Jataka tales and Indian legends (preferably different stories for each group)
Copies of stories can be obtained:
      Jataka Tales
      Famous Indian Legends

Activity:
1. Pre-Activity:  Introduce students to moral lessons (Aesop Fable’s etc)
2. Have students read a Jataka tale and
-Write a paragraph summary of the tale
-List the values taught in the story
-Discuss how the values taught are related to Buddhism
3. Have students read an Indian legend
-Write a paragraph summary of the tale
-List the values taught in the story
-Discuss how the values taught are related to Hinduism

Conclusion:
1. Have each group/person share they stories and morals
2. Make a list of the morals and discuss the universality of the moral lessons across the stories
