-Milarepa and Scenes from His Life, Eastern Tibet, Late 18th to early 19th century. -Milarepa was by most accounts the first Tibetan to become a Buddha. -The mountains of the Himalays are depicted in this thangka. -Just above Milarepa's head is his teacher Marpa. -Above Marpa is Vajrahara-a supreme Buddha. -Two Indian Adepts, Tilopa and Naropa are to the left and right of Milarepa in the clouds. -To the left and right of Milarepa are two of his disciples. -Just below the lotus pedastal are five dakinis who enjoy eating flesh. Milarepa battled with dakinis while he was meditating. He came out victorious. -At the bottom are scenes drom his life. On the left he is born and his father comes home from the market to name him. |
