Visit to John Street Baptist Church

African American Home

The visit of February 25, 2004 brought the class to John Street Baptist Church. Its congregation was founded in 1886 as an offshoot of Pleasant Street Baptist church and the building was erected in 1891 to serve a growing community of African Americans. When the pastor Rev. Hiram Conway died in 1920 he was the oldest Protestant pastor, having served the John Street congregation for 34 years. Many of the homes in the area date from this time. We were joined by the Rev. Catherine Reed and Rev. Dr. Roosevelt Hughes for a soul food dinner. The class ended the trip with a visit the Abbey Kelly Foster house, now residence of Judy Fask, Holy Cross, Director in Deaf Studies Program at Holy Cross. Abbey Kelly Foster played a major role in Worcester advocacy for abolition and for equal rights for women.
