Study Guide Questions
December 8 (M)

Reading: Steedly, "What is Culture? Does it Matter?" in Fieldwork (article)
Abu-Lughod, "Introduction" in Writing Women's Worlds (article)

1. Steedly writes that culture is a "dangerous tool to wield" and that she has decided to "write around culture." Why does she say this? Do you agree? Can you think of examples from this course to support your view?

2. What does Abu-Lughod mean by "writing against culture" and why does she seek to do this? How does her perspective differ from Steedly's?
