Lesson 1: Comparing and contrasting two versions of the Jataka Tale, "The Hare" 

Overview: Students will read two versions of the same tale. A worksheet will provide students with direction for comparing the tales and serve as a basis for full class discussion. 

Grade level: 10-12 

NCTE standards addressed:
Students read a wide range of print and nonprint texts to build an understanding of texts, of themselves and of the world. 
Students read a wide range of literature from many periods in many genres to build an understanding of the many dimensions (e.g. philosohical, ethical, aesthetic) of human experience. 

Objectives:
Students will identify differences between two versions of the same Tale. 
Students will explain the significance of the differences. 
Students will understand the importance of the Jataka Tales in the Buddhist tradition. 
Students will understand the central importance of karma as illustrated in the Jataka Tales. 

Materials:
Copies of  "The Hare" in The Marvelous Companion: Life Stories of the Buddha by Aryasura 
Dharma Publishing,1983. 
Copies of "The Hare Jataka" in Stories of the Buddha, translated and edited by Caroline A.F. Rhys Davids,Dover
Publications, Inc.,1989. 

Procedure: 
1. Students will read each tale and complete the worksheet individually or in small groups. 
2. Full class discussion of the tales, emphasizing concepts of dharma and karma.
