INTRODUCTION TO TIBET AND ITS MUSIC

Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama is the most important religious figure in contemporary Tibetan Buddhism, and the current Dalai Lama (the 14th in a long line of Dalai Lamas) is known the world over as a representative of that religion. He left Tibet with many other monks in 1959, who brought their holy books and built new monasteries in India, Nepal, Europe and the United States. (Go to “Politics” to find out a little more about the political status of Tibet, 1959-present.)  The Dalai Lama now lives in India with his followers, in a place called Dharamsala.  He has traveled many times to the United States.
