Project Title Kali: Cross-Cultural (Mis)Understandings

Segment 1:  First Impressions from Iconography

Examine various Kali images on line.  (see www.exoticindiaart.com for several great images in various media).

Have your students describe what they see as objectively as possible.  Some questions to consider:
What is Kali’s expression?
What is her body like?
What does she wear?
Where is she located on the canvas or sculpture?
What are her other accoutrements?
What elements to the images have in common?
What are some differences?
What seems to be the role of death in this culture, based on these images?
What is the connection between birth and death?

For homework:  Have students write their reactions/emotions/understandings of Kali based just on their first impressions of these images.  You might have them imagine they are journeying in India and have spent a day viewing various images of Kali:  what would they write home to their parents or sweetheart?  If your school is computer-savvy, students could create a “blog” site for their comments.
