Project Title Kali: Cross-Cultural (Mis)Understandings

Segment 4:  Kali in Western Poetry

Have students do close readings of the poems by Lucille Clifton, Merlin Stone, and May Sarton.  How has Kali been appropriated by these poets?  (You might have students break into groups for this exercise; the May Sarton poem, given its length, might best be done by several groups, after reading the whole thing through once.)

Extra Credit for those school districts where such a thing is possible:  Have students compare various artistic renderings of Christ’s crucifixion.  Have them imagine that they have never seen a crucifix and that they know nothing of Christianity.  What image of the Christian God would they get from just these pictures?
