Tibetan Art Lessons

Student's knowledge of Tibet will be woven into the curriculum though the process of making art. The Himalayan Region's culture will be addressed as students explore the various art lessons that focus on some of the cultural aspects of Buddhism, as it has been studied and copied throughout history. Maps, calendars and books on Tibet, Nepal, Buddhism and the Himalayan Region will be available for student use before making mandalas. The school's library will serve as a secondary source of visual aids on the arts of the Himalayas.


Mandala Designs- Elementary School

Students will explore the use of radial design art in an initial assignment working on a paper plate and using markers or colored pencils. After completing a student-made radial design, students will transistion to making a Tibetan Buddhist style mandala. Students will work in small groups discussing meanings of symbols that are used in mandalas. Modifications will be made as students use craft paper, glue and colored sand to simulate the mandala experience, however, making it their own artistic experience by making it a permanent image glued to paper.

Buddhist Figures- Secondary School

Students will work on drawing assignments that focus on, both body proportion and placement of the figure in a non-western pose such as a Buddha or Bodhisattvas. Indirectly, students will also address issues such as, art made for ancient, non-literate populations, that conveys meaning by the use of symbols, color, and attributes or the meaning of other guardians or demons. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the function of Buddhist art by creating a Buddhist thangka image on craft paper using tempera paint with black and gold ink. Students will have thangkas, books, magazines, calendars, and posters available for clarity and discussion of figures to be used in the Thangka.

Alternate Assignment: Students will develop and make their own Thangka design that focuses on their perceptions of ways to convey meaning about things that they are most interested in. The personal image must include attributes, articles, and the use of symbolism through color. Students will select their own medium and project size.
