Study Guide Questions for Readings
April 20 (F) - April 27 (F)

Read: Freeman, Entrepreneurial Selves: Neoliberal Respectability and the Making of a Caribbean Middle Class, Introduction, chapters 2, 4, and 5

1. How, according to Freeman, are market practices connected to self-making? Provide specific examples.

2. What is affect? What is neoliberalism? How are they connected in Barbados to ideas about reputation and respectability?

3. Freeman writes, "In short, marriage, intimate relationships, parenthood, and selfhood, like businesses, become projects that demand similar adaptability, innovations, sensitivity to external demands, creativity, and responsiveness" (58). What does she mean? Provide specific examples.

4. What is affective labor? How is it gendered? With what consequences?

5. In what ways is self-actualization becoming important in Barbados? How are yoga and prosperity religion connected, according to Freeman? And how do these compare to the ethos of capitalism that Weber identified?
