Study Guide Questions for Readings
February 1 (F) - February 4 (M)

Read: Pham, "The Right to Fashion in the Age of Terrorism" (Moodle article)
Schor, "Cleaning the Closet: Toward a New Fashion Ethic" (Moodle article)
Moon, "Colors, Patterns, Fabric and Trim: Fast-Fashion Families in Downtown Los Angeles" (Moodle article)

1. According to Pham, why did fashion become central to an ethical sartorial politics after 9/11? How did this fuel the market for fast fashion? What are the effects of the perception of fashion as a liberal democratic right?

2. What is the minimalist ethic? What does Schor argue about it? Why does she see a "true materialism" as a possible solution?

3. What are the effects on producers, consumers, and the environment of the segmentation of the clothing market into upscale and mass market or discounted tiers?

4. How does Moon's account of LA's Jobber Market complicate your image of the production process behind fast fashion? How is it different from the vertical integration that Daniel Miller describes?
