Luis Boguñá Porta (1893-1936)

THE PICTURE
This photograph was taken by a friend of the Jesuit shortly after the priest was executed in Gerona, Spain, in the early morning of 14 August 1936.  On July 16th, Padre Luis had come from Barcelona, where he was a director of the Sodality of Our Lady,  to attend a convention of sodalists in Gerona when the civil war broke out in Spain.  Given shelter with three other  priests who also secretly continued  their ministry during those days, their visits were observed by hostile forces who seized the four priests. Led as prisoners out of Gerona itself, the priests were forced to dig their own graves and executed by machine gun fire while their backs were turned.  This picture is a copy of one that Juan Senor Boguna (<juansenor@hotmail.com>), a grand nephew of Padre Luis, has kept in  his missal throughout his life. The beatification process for Padre Luis was opened at Gerona in Septembner of 1951.
