Lesson 2: Rewriting a Jataka Tale for Children 

Overview: Students will select a Jataka Tale to rewrite for a primary school audience. Student adaptations will be recorded in a handmade book with outlined illustrations. Elementary students will read the books with the students and then color in and add to the illustrations. 

Grade level: 10-12; 1-4. 
NCTE standards addressed:
Students adjust their use of spoken, written, and visual language (e.g. conventions, style,vocabulary) to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences. 

Objectives:
Students will adapt a Jataka Tale for primary school audience without compromising its meaning or intent. 
Students will create a Five-stitch book for their story. 
Students will sketch basic illustrations for their books. 
Students will share books with elementary school students. 

Materials: Single copies of a variety of Jataka Tales from the following website or other source.

Procedure: 
1. Students will select a Jataka Tale to read and rewrite for a primary school audience. 
2. Students will make a 5-stitch  or any other style book in which to record their adaptation. 
3. Students will sketch illustrations for elementary students to color in and add to. 
4. Students will share books and donate them to the classroom library.
