Merchant's Tale - Full Length

Lesson Plan

This lesson is designed to be a one day introduction to the money and banking unit; it is meant to get kids to begin thinking about the evolution of money and its uses as part of our global economy.

Begin with a general introduction of the Silk Road, what was it, how did it work, what did it transport.

Have students read "The Merchant's Tale." There is a shorter version on the student resources page, a link to a longer version on this page. Possible discussion questions are:

• What were some of the things traded along the silk route?
• What were some of the dangers of the silk route?
• What do you think is required to be a successful trader along the silk route?

Instruct students to refer to worksheet and answer questions 1 & 2 as they are working.

After they have completed the interactive map on the Ancient Silk Road, have the students complete the rest of the worksheet.

When students are through with the worksheet, they can take the review quiz to make sure they got the main concepts.
