About the Author

I teach World History at the Emma Willard School, an independent girl's day and boarding high school in Troy, NY.

This website was the result of a desire on my part to make better use of technology and the opportunity that the internet provides to create a space where teachers and students can interact and communicate in ways that have the potential to enhance learning.
I was also lucky enough to participate in an NEH Summer Institute for teachers where each teacher was given the support necessary to put their curriculum plans on-line. Special thanks to the Institute directors, Todd Lewis and Leonard VanDer Kuijp, for their vision and dedication to seeing teachers as scholars and participants in the broader academic community.

For teachers or students who would like to know more about my own academic background before using information from this website in research or teaching, I have an A.B. in Late Antique Cultures and Religious Studies from Brown University and an M.A.R. in Religion and the Arts from Yale University Divinity School. I taught theology at an independent Catholic high school before coming to Emma Willard. Additionally, much of the material on this site is the result of the expert presentations and lectures given by scholars in the field of Himalayan Studies at the NEH Institute.

For students interested in citing this website in their research, please feel free to email me with questions (the same holds true for teachers who have questions or concerns). Our department uses CMS format for research papers, and a citation from my website would look like the following :

Snyder, Emily Marso. Hinduism and Buddhism: Lessons for World History. http://college.holycross.edu/projects/himalayan_cultures/
2006/esnyder/index.html.

If you were citing a document included on this website, like a slide lecture or primary text, your citation would look like the following sample:

Snyder, Emily Marso. "The Life of the Buddha." Hinduism and Buddhism: Lessons for World History. http://college.holycross.edu/
projects/himalayan_cultures/2006/esnyder/index.html.

I hope you find this website helpful in your teaching and your learning.
