Society

Society basically means how people lived. It includes their food, clothing, shelter, education, and how they spent their leisure time. That might include different kinds of entertainment such as the sports people played as well as the toys and games children used. Festivals are also a part of the way people celebrated their lives. Often the people who make up the society are divided into groups as well. These are usually called classes and in India they are called castes.

On this web page you will be going on an Internet TREASURE HUNT.  Your task is to find the answers to questions about ten areas of Indian society. Record your answers in your Social Studies notebook under the topic Society.

1. Food: Find a recipe that uses the Indian spice curry. It may be a vegetarian or beef or seafood dish which are the most                   popular curry dishes in India.

2. Clothing: Find a picture of a sari, salwar, dhoti, and turban. Read the descriptions and choose two to describe in your                  notebook.

3. Shelter: Indians live in homes that can look like palaces or cardboard boxes and everything in between. Describe a home in a                  rural area and one in a big city.

4. Education: Read one of the folktales that Indian children often read at their school and give a short summary in your                 notebook. http://www.pitara.com/talespin/     or                                   http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/tikkabilla/stories/rupee.shtml?world

5. Entertainment: There are two treasures to hunt for in this topic. What is Bollywood? and What game is played in the                  movie Lagaan?

6. Toys and Games: What did the maharajah, who used to live in Fatepur Sikri many years ago, use for his outdoor game of                 chess?

7. Sports: Another one with several treasures! In what sports does India participate in the Olympic Games? Have they ever                 won a medal and if so, which one?

8. Celebrations: Describe Diwali and tell how and when it is celebrated.

9. Animals: Why is the cow sacred to the people of India?

10. Social Classes: What are the names of the four caste levels and what is the class of people called who are lower than the                 fourth one?
