Lesson 5: Prayer Flags

In this lesson, students will study the history of making Prayer Flags in the tradition of the Tibetan people. Students will explore the images and symbols used by Buddhist artists.

Students being inspired by Buddhist symbols and icons will create their own prayer flag, personalizing it with their own unique images and wording. Colored paper and markers or assorted materials will be used for this lesson.

The technique of woodblock printing used in authentic Prayer Flags will be explored.

Lesson Objectives:

Knowledge students will gain:

  • The History of Tibetan Prayer Flags.
  • The traditions of other cultures.
  • Insight into the human longing for peace and good will towards others.
  • Buddhist symbols and images.
  • Woodblock printing processes.
