This
image shows a typical choir from a bird's eye view. Several altars
are visible. The area of clerical performance is separated by a choir screen
from the space of the laity. The clergy would gather as specified times
during the day in the seats (choir
stalls). Their prayers were conducted with a major emphasis on
the recitation of the 150 Psalms. In antiphonal responses, one group
calling to the other - clergy to the left (north) answered those on the
right (south). (Viollet-le-Duc, Architecture, 3:235: Saint-Denis). back to "worship" |
