A bishop wore a mitre on his head, a pointed headdress.  In the 12th century, the form was low and relatively simple. The appearance of a collar at the neck is produced by the border of the amice, a linen covering worn over the back and chest.  (Viollet-le-Duc, Mobilier 4:142) back to "worship"
