This reconstruction
of a Eucharistic Dove in suspension, shows the dramatic use of liturgical
objects that characterized medieval worship. The dove was placed on a platform
that was suspended a chain, allowing it to elevated and lowered. The
brace for the dove was augmented with an image of the Virgin and Child at
the top and an angel appearing to hold the platform. The drama of the
revelation could be further augmented by a veil drawn to enclose or open
to reveal the dove. Margery Kempe's revelation that she was granted
a miraculous vision of the host fluttering as a dove at Mass (ch. 20, 1512-15)
is most probably associated with the use of the Eucharistic dove that contained
the host. (Viollet-le-Duc, Mobilier 1:250) back to "worship" |
