Course Description: This course provides students with an opportunity to read about and put into practice for themselves many of the key techniques of anthropological field research, particularly methods for participant observation and interviewing. Students will read a variety of ethnographic texts to evaluate the approaches to research and writing that anthropologists have commonly used. Writing projects will consist of methodological exercises conducted independently or in a small group on campus, in local communities, or via social media and other digital communications platforms. Themes include campus community, religion, art, consumption (clothing, food), and social media, with the opportunity to focus on dynamics of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and class. Special attention will be devoted to ethical issues in the practice of anthropological research and to the politics of studying and writing about other people.
