CURRICULUM and CREDIT
ISLE is formally affiliated with the University of Peradeniya, one of the leading institutions of higher education in South Asia. University faculty offer a range of required and elective courses specially tai-lored to the needs of ISLE students. Extracurricular instruction in music, dance, and other art forms, and in meditation, is also available for interested students.
Classroom study is supplemented by two tours of the island. One tour surveys Sri Lanka's historical civiliza-tions, with field study of archaeological and religious sites at the ancient capitals of Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, and Polonnaruva. The second tour takes in the central highlands and the south and west coasts of the island. Included are visits to a tea estate, the popular pilgrimage destination of Kataragama, a wildlife sanctuary, long expanses of beaches, and the important colonial port of Galle.
ISLE member schools grant academic credit for satis-factory completion of program coursework. Each school individually determines the total number of credits to be awarded, and the manner in which credits and grades are recorded on student transcripts. Allocation of credits to departments, or to majon/minor requirements, must be negotiated by the student with the home college. The full load consists of all required courses and four elective courses.
The 18-week semester -- August to early December -- is composed of introductory orientation and concluding independent study sections, and two sessions of optional courses, with breaks for island tours. Language study is required, and continues throughout the program. All courses are taught by Sri Lankan senior faculty, most of whom have taught at ISLE colleges or other educational institutions in the United States.
